The Victorian Football Association (VFA), now known as the Victorial Football League (VFL), commenced in 1877.

First division

The first division premiership has been awarded every year except the years of the First and Second World War since 1877.

Second division

From 1961 until 1988, the VFA existed in a two-tier, relegation/promotion structure. The champions from division two were promoted each season. These champions were:

  • Northcote Dragons: 1961, 1982
  • Dandenong Redlegs: 1962
  • Preston Bullants: 1963, 1965
  • Geelong West Roosters: 1964, 1968, 1972
  • Prahran Two Blues: 1966, 1987
  • Oakleigh Devils: 1967, 1988
  • Williamstown Seagulls: 1969, 1976
  • Coburg Lions: 1970, 1974
  • Sunshine Crows: 1971
  • Caulfield Bears: 1973
  • Brunswick Magpies: 1975, 1980, 1985
  • Mordialloc Bloodhounds: 1977
  • Frankston Dolphins: 1978
  • Camberwell Cobras: 1979, 1981
  • Springvale Scorpions: 1983
  • Box Hill Mustangs: 1984, 1986
